Loving God is the foundation of our faith, the essence of our purpose, and the heartbeat of our spiritual journey. Jesus reminds us of this truth when He declares, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38, ESV). But what does it truly mean to love God? Is it an emotion, a duty, or a lifestyle? The answer encompasses all of these and much more.
To love God is to respond to His love for us. The apostle John makes this clear: “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). God’s love is the starting point of everything. Before we could ever love Him, He demonstrated His love through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Loving God, then, is not about earning His affection but responding to the overwhelming reality of His grace. A.W. Tozer writes, “God’s love is active, drawing us to Himself. His love is personal. He doesn’t love humanity in some vague sense; He loves humans. He loves you and me.”
Loving God involves more than words; it is an active, intentional way of living. Jesus tells us, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Our love for God is displayed in obedience. This doesn’t mean a robotic adherence to rules but a heartfelt alignment of our will with His. It’s choosing His ways over our own desires, trusting that His plans are good, even when they challenge us. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer observed, “Only he who believes is obedient; only he who is obedient believes.” To love God is to trust Him deeply, even when we don’t fully understand His ways.
Loving God is not about perfection; it’s about devotion. It’s falling down and getting back up, knowing His arms are always open.
Loving God also requires cultivating a relationship with Him. Imagine a friendship or marriage without time, conversation, or effort. The same is true of our relationship with God. Loving Him means prioritizing time in prayer, immersing ourselves in His Word, and seeking Him in worship. Psalm 42:1 captures this beautifully: “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.” When we love God, our hearts yearn for His presence because we recognize that nothing else can satisfy our deepest longings.
As a pastor, my heart beats to walk alongside others in their journey toward loving God. I’ve witnessed the transformative power of love for God in countless lives—how it breaks chains of sin, heals wounds, and brings hope to the hopeless. Loving God is not about perfection; it’s about devotion. It’s falling down and getting back up, knowing His arms are always open.
To love God is to align our hearts with His, to live in awe of His holiness, and to reflect His love in how we treat others. It’s a journey, not a destination. As Augustine said, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” May we daily seek to love Him more deeply, with all our heart, soul, and mind, as He lovingly leads us into the fullness of life.
